Reach Out and Read-Charlotte (ROR) is an early literacy program bringing new books and advice about the importance of reading aloud into the pediatric exam room. ROR is designed to take advantage of the existing structure of pediatric primary care, in which parents of young children have regular, one-on-one, developmentally focused visits with pediatricians during the first years of a child's life. The ROR program model is based on research that shows a connection between the frequency of sharing books with young children and enhanced language development.
Annually the program provides over 25,000 books to children six months to age 5, in 16 practices throughout Charlotte.
Volunteers are needed to read to children or help distribute books among our physician practices. We also accept new or gently used books for additional reading materials in our waiting rooms. For more information on how you can help, volunteer or make a donation, call (704) 375-0172.
