- 2000 - MCMS President John T. Klimas, MD, formed the Access Project Task Force.
- March 2002 - Mecklenburg Access Coalition (MAC) was formed to identify community needs and resources to support the uninsured and underinsured.
- Summer 2002 - Mecklenburg Medical Alliance Endowment provides funds to MCMS for two interns to complete assessment of community resources. MCMS publishes a report entitled, "Assessing Our Resources: Survey of Existing Health Care Resources for the Indigent Population in Mecklenburg County."
- October 2002 - Alan McKenzie, CEO of Buncombe County Project Access, visited Charlotte and spoke to the Access Project Task Force and MCMS Board of Directors.
- November 2002 - A physician survey indicates that the MCMS membership is supportive of a project similar to the one in Buncombe County.
- January 2003 - Representatives from Buncombe County speak at the annual orientation meeting for new MCMS committee members and leadership.
- April 2003 - MCMS hires a project coordinator. Financial support for this position comes from the Mecklenburg Medical Alliance Endowment.
- June 2003 - MCMS staff and MAC staff complete a grant application to the Duke Endowment, anticipating funding for December 1 implementation.
- October-December 2003 - MCMS gets financial support from The Duke Endowment, The Blue Cross Blue Shield of
- North Carolina Foundation, Lincoln Healthcare Foundation and NC Attorney General's office.
- January 2004 - Project software is installed.
- June 2004 - Forms and process finalized. Patient ID cards approved.
- July 2004 - First patient applications distributed.
- August 2004 - First patient enrolled.
- January 2006 - PRO establishes relationship with MedAssist of Mecklenburg to provide prescription medications for PRO clients.
- September 2006 - Value of donated services exceeds $5 million.
- July 2007 - Value of donated services exceeds $10 million.
- January 2008 -Value of donated services exceeds $15 million.
- September 2008 - Value of donated services exceeds $20 million.
- November 2008 - Physicians Reach Out moved under Community Health Services' umbrella of services.
